Making Recreation Inclusive

At SMILE Mass, we believe a beach day—or any day—should be for everyone. That’s why we created the Equipment Loaner Program, designed to provide short-term access to adaptive equipment for recreation, travel, and daily life across New England and beyond.

Whether you’re borrowing a beach wheelchair for a sunny day on the shore, a stroller for a walk through Boston, or equipment for a trip to Disney, Six Flags, or even to bring a loved one home for the holidays, we’re here to help make it possible.

Borrowing this equipment allows families to be fully present in the moments that matter. And thanks to our generous supporters, SMILE Mass can continue purchasing this equipment to help eliminate barriers for more families every year.

To date, we’ve loaned out over 500 pieces of adaptive equipment—and counting.

What You Can Borrow

Before launching the Equipment Loaner Program, SMILE Mass began by donating floating beach wheelchairs to public beaches and ponds across New England—places that were often out of reach for individuals with mobility challenges.

Today, we donate approximately 20 beach wheelchairs each year, working toward a bold vision: to make every public beach and pond in New England accessible—one chair at a time.

As demand grew, we expanded our impact—offering families across New England access to additional adaptive equipment they can borrow and take anywhere, helping to make everyday adventures possible.

In the Words of Those We’ve Helped

SMILE Mass offered the Ocean Park, Maine community with a beach wheelchair in 2017. It was used all summer long and people loved the freedom it gave them to see and experience the beach. This donation is a way for us to continue to say thanks. Your work is very important!

This organization is doing so much for so many families. I used their beach chair loaner program to get down to the beach with my family for the first time in over a decade. I didn’t really realize how much I missed spending time “strolling” at low tide and swimming in the ocean. There aren’t enough words of gratitude to express how this organization has changed my life.

Help Us Expand Access

A day at the beach. A walk in the park. A weekend away.

These may seem like small things—but for someone with a disability, they can be out of reach without the right tools. Traditional wheelchairs can’t handle sand. Many vacation spots lack ramps. And adaptive equipment is often too
expensive for families to own.

Thats why your support matters. Your donation today can make
more beaches, trails, and parks across New England truly accessible.
